These days, it is rare for me to find a game that I believe is worth buying. When I bought games more frequently, though, a game that I thought was good enough to pay for twice was truly a rarity — but that is exactly what I did with Jones in the Fast Lane, buying it once on floppy disk and again on CD-ROM when Sierra released the enhanced version. I liked the game that much.
Jones in the Fast Lane supports up to four players.
Jones in the Fast Lane is a computer board game executed nearly perfectly. It has a few random elements that would be difficult to execute in a physical board game, making it something that would be difficult to execute in any medium other than a computer game. It also requires the perfect time investment — you can easily finish a two-player game in less than an hour, if both players know how to play the game. Games against the computer are also over quickly. More importantly, the game has an excellent challenge level; you’ll play it many times before working out a “perfect” system, and even then, you’ll still lose from time to time.
Jones in the Fast Lane is best thought of as a computer version of the board game, The Game of Life. In order to win, you must meet the goals that you set for yourself in four areas: money, happiness, career and education. Each of these goals is balanced out by the others; you can only earn money if you work, and working takes time away from other activities that you can pursue, such as relaxing and attending classes. If you don’t advance your education, you will be unable to get the highest-paying jobs. If you don’t relax, you will eventually get sick, resulting in a doctor’s bill and less available time on your next turn. As you pursue these goals, you will have plenty of other things competing for your attention, such as goodies from the local electronics store, food, clothes and rent payments. All of these events take place on a brightly-colored board, with digitized actors providing dialogue rife with Sierra’s trademark humor.
Prepare for plenty of classic Sierra humor in the dialog.
My entire family loved this game. I played against my parents and little brother, and clocked plenty of time against the computer as well. The game remains available today in the form of a wonderfully rendered Flash version that plays in a browser window.
For all of its good points, though, Jones in the Fast Lane was not without a few faults. For one, a few systems that were implemented didn’t have much of an effect on the game’s outcome. For example, the bank has a stock market that allows you to invest in a few stocks and commodities. Once you know how to play, though, games don’t last long enough for the gains from your investments to have much of an impact. You can accomplish far more simply by working. The game also features a pawn shop, but again, once you know how to play, you’ll never use it.
The CD-ROM version of Jones in the Fast Lane featured a cool technology for the time; Sierra had managed to synchronize still photos of voice actors pretty well with recorded speech by photographing the actors with a variety of different mouth positions, and switching between those photos for different syllables in the dialogue. This made video clips unnecessary, saving space on the CD-ROM disc for more voice content. The speech for the game was recorded as pure CD audio — if your CD-ROM drive had a headphone jack, you could listen to the dialogue separately from the game music if you desired.
